Pumped Up Kicks

So here's the result of the Toitoy X PUMA collaborative collection. Just to refreshhhh your memory, the theme was 'The streets you live on.' And I basically wanted to create awareness through this project. The name of my collection is Pumped Up Kicks which is the title of a song by Foster the People. The song deals with angry teens who have criminal intentions. Pumped up kicks were the shoes rich kids wore in the 90s and the States had a lot of cases where these kids would be targeted because they wore them. I directed my theme to the street violence in Johannesburg.

1000 Drawings

1000 drawings is an annual event in Joburg where people give in their illustrations on an A5 paperat selected stores up until the 1000 drawings event. On the night, all the illustrations go up where people can purchase them for R100 each. The money goes to charity. I think it's such an amazing initiative. Here are some pics...

Here's what we came away with .........

I got the whole world...

I love maps! Particulary the maps you find in the National Geographic magazines. They are so colourful and lovely but they are hard to come by so I was really glad when I came accross a second hand bookstore where they sold NG magazines and there it was ... a magazine with a 'Map included' sticker on it. :) I had to get it framed.

ToiToy X PUMA Collaboration

So, after the mastermind of ToiToy in CT, Earl Fischhoff saw my  Smokin' Labbit Design I did for ToiToy earlier this year, he kept me in mind for the PUMA x Toitoy Collab! I was asked (together with 12 other S.A designers) to design a Toy and PUMA shoes around the theme of 'The Streets you Live on'. We need to physically design these shoes (Im not sure if we all recieved the same pair as i have no idea who the others are). But hey! I am so excited! :) The exhibition will be held at ToiToy Kloof street on the 15th of December 2011. I already have some nice ideas...so..........keep your eyes peeled friends!!! :)

I was just shown this website where it so happens that there was a sneaker custom workshop in Joburg!! I cant believe i didn't know about it! anyway here are some pics of that.
I absolutely love this one...........

Untitled

Haven't done a digital illustration in a while so thought i'd give it a bash especially after getting inspired by IFX all over again. No reason for the subject matter, i just tend to go with it as i go along. Time: about 45 min.

We ate the rainbow

This is the birthday cake i made for my twin sister (Marija) this year. I don't know why I'm only blogging it now. I guess it's because Matty's birthday is coming up and it made me think of it or I'm just simply craving the deliciousness of it. My sister made me a cake too using my favourite ingredient,: vanilla and my favourite chocolate: White KitKat. Here is her edible masterpiece for me!

Woolies Retail Project

This is another old gem i uncovered from 3rd year. We were asked to design the retail for one of our made up Woolies kitchen products. The product had to be Italian and we were asked to give it a vintage feel. I decided to express my love for tea-cups and named my tea-cup range; Tesoro which means 'treasure' in Italiano. Here are the two posters I designed for the range:)

I heart JHB

'I heart JHB' is a project I did in my 3rd year of study which i recently stumbled upon in my hardrive and thought why not show it here. :) It was an ISTD Typography project where the theme that I went with (out of 4 other themes) was 'Connecting through Type'. Here I went with the idea of the connections of streets and roads and what better area to connect through type with than central Joburg, my Bermuda Triangle err... square, the very place I dread getting lost in but yet always lose my way in :) I drew some of my inspiration from the famous I heart New York logo designed by Milton Glaser. Each traffic light is dotted with a tiny heart showing how despite the fact that I always lose my way in the CBD, i do love it.

Switcheroo I love you

This is me and my Matty doing the switcheroo! I would recommend this little activity to anyone and everyone! We were in stitches for a good hour after this was taken. Now i know what it feels like to wear my boyfriends clothes. I sort of felt like a gangster with those shorts below my knees. Matty looks absolutely hilarious! ha ha! I first saw it done on Sincerely Hanna. 'Hana is a self-taught photographer raised in Whistler and currently living in Vancouver, Canada. Her main focus in photography is the “little moments” that people sometimes miss and later wish they had captured'. And thats a great focus to have! I'm definately glad we captured this moment. :)

My Lovely time at the Swapping Mall

I loved running a workshop and showing people how to create a lovely lamp out of milk bottle cuttings. It was nice to see how amazed they were at what you can do with a little creativity! I also created various milk bottle brooches and hair clips which were going fast! The whole event was a success and I'd do it again in a heartbeat! People got away with some rad stuff! A 13" mac book was up for swap for 6 tokens. I saw a disco ball go in seconds and some vintage clothing didn't last long on shelf either. We had 4 other experts running workshops, Up cycling furniture, clothing and jewelery. It was fun to get back to basics for a change. I hate spending money so this gave me such a lovely feeling!

This lamp was a new design i tried, not unlike the Firefly lamp with the glass jar though. I instead used a globe that my dad helped me attach to the lid of the glass jar together with the globe fitment. I then placed masking tape in stripes on the jar and sprayed it with Frosted Glass ( amazing invention BTW) :) These swapped like hotcakes!!

Wanna Swap??

Capitec Bank has launched a fantastic initiative called, The Swapping Mall. The aim is to save money and not spend a cent. This is how it's going down: You put aside some of your items that you don't need but that are still in good nik. Bring 5 items or less to Atlas Studios in Braamfontein on the 30th and 31st of July and drop them off at the Swapper Drop Off. Your items will be graded and you will be given some tokens with which you can exchange other goods that are up for swapping! This way there will be no buyers remourse! What a fantastic idea!!! You can get more info by checking out their facebook page!

Anyway, i was asked to run a workshop at the event (yes, ME!!)  where i will be showcasing my milk bottle lamps and making some mini lamps and milk bottle goodies! There will be a few amazing workshops running like, upcycling jewelery which will be run by my good friend Indianna Harris, you can check out her stuff here!

Cant wait!!!

ToiToy Custom Designed Labbit by ME ! Meet Señor DeMario!!

I was recently asked to design a Kidrobot Vinyl toy by toy-enthusiast Angel-on-film for a custom toy show in Cape town at a vinyl toy store called ToiToy.   These vinyl toys come in various shapes and sizes, the one i was asked to design is a 10 inch bunny shaped toy called a Labbit. I was greatly pleased to be given this opportunity as it is something so new and different to anything else i have ever done. This was my very first time designing a vinyl toy and i must say; as fun as it is, it is also quite tricky and requires a great deal of patience and time. If you're in the cape at the end of July please feel free to catch the show at Toitoy on 49 Kloof street. I am sure there will be amazing South African talent on display!! :)
